GTR-9 Audio problem in Linux with Azalia enabled in bios.

GTR-9. No sound in Linux with NB Azalia = auto/enabled. I only get sound (line out) working when Azalia = False. From Linux it looks correct, but it still doesn’t work until I disable Azalia. Bug or not?

Linux detects the sound card (ALC897)
PipeWire starts normally and shows audio output
ALSA device is present and recognized
No actual audio output unless NB Azalia is disabled in BIOS

Hi. Never had myself or heard of anyone having any sound issues at all with the GTR9 Pro in Linux with the default AUTO settings in BIOS. That’s likely an issue with your Linux distro install or configuration. Make sure to use a relatively recent kernel version for best driver support. You should also be more detailed/descriptive of your setup (no one can guess it):

GTR9 Pro version? - v1.0 (Intel E610 NIC) or v2.2 (Realtek RT8127E NIC);
GTR9 Pro BIOS version?
BIOS Settings (Screenshots?) - are you using the defaulft BIOS settings or have you changed some? Which ones were changed? (take screenshots);
Linux distro name and version?
Linux Kernel version?
System Logs errors? - related to audio playback issues?

GTR9 Pro 2.2, upgraded BIOS to GTRPR07 today.
I am running Linux Mint 22.3 with the latest patches. Kernel 6.17.0-29.

I had exactly the same problem with the previous hardware version of the GTR-9 (v1.0, Intel E610 NIC). I’m using the default BIOS settings, except that I had to set Azalia to Disabled to get the audio working. Maybe its distro related…

I can’t find any strange being logged. I’ve checked that the correct audio device (Line Out) is selected and it is not muted.

Sounds like distro or configuration related then. You have also not detailed which sound output you are using. I’ll assume HDMI/DP output to your Display built-in speakers. HDMI/DP has typically 4 outputs - make sure you have selected/enabled the correct one. You can also try a different Linux distro ISO (recent) booting from USB and check if the sound works.

The 3.5 mm line out on the back (panel/rear side). The other outputs (hdmi/dp, built-in, ..) works fine.

I haven’t tested any other distros yet, but with Claude’s help I found a solution that works.
After applying this fix, I can get audio from my “line out” (rear) with “Azalia” enabled in the BIOS.

CAUSE
The machine has two HD Audio controllers:
AMD HD Audio — drives HDMI outputs (card 0)
Realtek ALC897 — drives the 3.5mm analog jacks (card 2)

The issue is in the codec’s pin configuration:
Pin Default 0×01014020: [Jack] Line Out at Ext Rear
Conn = ⅛, Color = Green
Pin-ctls: 0×40: OUT
The rear Line Out pin is configured as [Jack], meaning the driver expects a jack presence detection signal before activating the output. On the Beelink GTR9 the physical jack detection circuit is not properly wired or reported, so the driver assumes nothing is plugged in and silences the output — even when headphones or speakers are connected.
HDMI audio is unaffected because it uses a completely separate AMD HD Audio device that does not rely on analog jack detection.
Realtek’s Windows driver silently compensates for the misconfiguration, Linux does not — and Beelink has never reported or fixed the root cause.

FIX
$sudo apt install alsa-tools-gui
$hdajackretask

Select HD-Audio Generic (ALC897) in the codec dropdown
Find the the Pin ID: 0×18
Enable Override and set it to Line Out (rear)
Click Apply now to test immediately without rebooting
If audio works, click Install boot override to make it permanent

hdajackretask writes a firmware override file to /lib/firmware/hda-jack-retask.fw and loads it via the kernel’s firmware loading mechanism.

when Azalia is disabled in BIOS the entire HD Audio controller disappears from the system, and Linux falls back to a simpler audio mode — likely AC’97 or the ALC897 is exposed via a different bus mechanism that does not use the HD Audio protocol with its pin configuration and jack detection logic.
