Mounting External Drive issue

Please pardon my question if discussed before. If so. Please point me to the info.
I have a GT King Game System.
Came with 256gb Card with Games and Program to run.
Updated to 4.8 Emulec. All good there.
Dont use the Android part but it is running Android 9.0
Retroarch is also on box
Had this 4 years works great. I do understand how to add additional games to the sd.card and all works fine. Now SD card is full. So I have a 2tb ssd WD external drive. I have attempted to get the GT to accept the Roms I have placed on it. The drive is brand new and works perfectly on other computers. I Formated the drive MBR EXFat.
I place the drive the GT box, load it. It goes to zero games untill I unplug the drive and reboots the games on the SD card and works again.
I have spent hours and hours trying to get this to work before postind help
