SER8 8845. Sleeps normally but a few hours later suddenly overheats!

Have an issue on one of my SER8 (I have two). If it goes to sleep for a short period of time, I can wake it without a problem. During modern standby it draws only ₂-3W of power.

After four or five hours though, it becomes super hot and unresponsive - pressing the button doesn’t resume from wake. The case is painful to touch for more than a second, likely 50C or more, and after I hard reboot it CPU is still 90C so probably higher before.

Issue is I think the fan isn’t running and something has woken the CPU and won’t allow to go back to a low power state.

How do I diagnose this more fully? Who has run into this before?

I have installed the AMD graphics and chipset drivers separately. Am on Win11. Tried to use WPR but the logs disappear after reboot.

2、Please adjust the power settings on your PC to optimize performance and reduce heat generation.
Lowering the maximum processor state or using power-saving modes can help.
Go to control panel —power option—change to High performance— change plan setting—advanced setting —processor power management— change both 100% to 99% , click save.

This happens when the computer is in modern standby. The fan isn’t running but some how the processor at some point ends up drawing 17W of power resulting in overheating. It’s not a problem with the wrong fan profile while the computer is fully awake…

I changed from USB-C power to the barrel jack, and it didn’t overheat but it rebooted randomly. No crash in event viewer, no memory dump, just the Event ID 41 (“The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first”).

That’s a hardware level reboot, yes?

Actually, can’t send it back because they said there are customs duties/tariffs and they can’t cover shipping….this ought to be a software or firmware issue though not hardware. Something is waking the CPU but the fan doesn’t restart.

I figured out the issue - if Secure BIO is turned on in BIOS, sleep often has issues where I am unable to wake from sleep and the computer overheats…

Disabling Secure BIO makes issue go away.

This is happening again, and very aggravating. I’ve narrowed it down this time to a malfunctioning device:

PCI Express Root Port
Location: PCI bus 0, device 3, function 1

This device is currently waiting on another device or set of devices to start. (Code 51)

Dependencies:

USB4@#SB.PCI0.GP19.NHI0

I had managed to update the driver and it worked for a while but somehow the driver reverted to:

Any ideas how to fix this?

The dependency it references is an ACPI device, I think
