On October 8th, in the evening, my SER 9 wanted to apply an Windows update when I rebooted.
Upon apparent completion, it restarted and froze on the startup screen
I did a power down/ power up and it started “Automatic Repair”, it finished and came up with a blue screen menu suggesting a restart might fix it. I restarted and ended back at frozen restart screen.
Repeated the power down up and went into advanced options and tried, in turn (with power down/up in between) the following:
- Startup repair
- Uninstall updates
- System restore (discovering that windows update no longer makes restore point by default); and
- Using startup settings for a safe boot
All without any improvement, other than collecting a few different stop code screens (mainly 0xa0000001, or “DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE” and, a couple of times, “SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION” “what failed: amdkmdag.sys”). I cannot tell you what the first stop codes after the update were as the blue screen went by too fast.
Then used command prompt, verified I could still see the other external drives attached to the SER9, and backed up the document, pictures and download folders and other good stuff to an external drive and my bills spreadsheet to a usb stick
I then tried the CMOS procedure several times with no improvement.
I did manage to access the BIOS settings and catch screenshots of my BIOS version (V103 ) and boot setup. I can provide pics of these as well as my serial number and the various stop codes.
As of yet, I have not tried a windows reset, mainly because I have read that it is rarely successful and may make things worse.
I’m prepared to do a windows install as a last resort, mainly because of the many reinstalls I will have to do after.
I bought my SER9 on November 23, 2024 from Amazon and it has been running pretty much without issue ever since. My serial number starts with YHX374. I do have two monitors attached (HDMI and DisplayPort) and four external USB drives via a USB hub. I have installed office software, chrome, a few games, several 3d editing systems and a few utilities. On several occasions, I have noticed that a few Windows updates failed repeatedly but that it would end up resolved by subsequent more recent updates. I did apply some AMD driver updates last spring. I access it almost daily using Google Remote Desktop.
So, my question is, what should I do next?
